Chapter 12

Next day, they all woke up early in the morning. After the camp was demolished, goods lifted, sorted out, and placed in the carts, Guru gave instructions for proceeding with the journey.

Rama had been observing Lakshmana from the morning itself. Compared to other days, Lakshmana had woken up early. He had not delayed a little bit even while taking bath and attending to other morning rituals. He had also appeared more enthusiastic than others in starting the journey. But all the while, he had exercised all the self control at his command and kept his mouth shut.

On receiving Vishwamitra’s command as the whole group started marching, Lakshmana’s eyes full of curiosity lifted to Guru’s face. “The Story, Gurudeva!”

Suddenly the Guru laughed. Sharing his happiness with Rama by exchanging messages through the eyes, the Guru said: “Did you not sleep at night, Sumitra?”

“I slept wonderfully, Gurudeva”, said Lakshmana in his swaggering manner. From the time I have come with you, I sleep very soundly at nights after the exertion during the days. In the morning when Brother Rama wakes me up, only then….”

“…I get up with great difficulty”, Rama completed the sentence. Lakshmana blushed and smiled.

“Then it is fine”, the Guru covered up for him. “Sound sleep is the sign of good health…. The reason I made the enquiry, son, was to know whether the story had disturbed your sleep during the night?”

Rama smiled. “Gurudeva, Lakshmana is great in this respect. When he is hearing the story, the sleep will not come to him. But once he is asleep, he forgets the story altogether.”

“There is nothing wrong with an historical story, Gurudeva! My mother says that historical stories add flesh and bones to the history to make it alive.”

“There is nothing wrong with it. Why only historical, there is nothing wrong with any good story. Now hear the story”, said the Guru.

The second day was full of excitement and ceremonies. Neither the inmates of the Ashram had any free time, nor the guests. In the morning, the ceremonies started with the sacrificial session, and before lunch four meetings were held separately at different places. After lunch, discussions were to be held in an open session on the problems identified in the four meetings for the benefit of common people. To these, who were more interested in going through the new books, permission was granted for not attending the open session, so that they could go to the Book Gallery to examine the books and study them.

Gautama himself was extremely eager to visit the Book Gallery. Only if he could entrust the chairmanship of the open session to some one else, he would be able to spend some time among the new books and derive the unique pleasure. He had thought of requesting Devraja Indra or Emperor Seerdhwaja to chair the open session. But Indra had not been seen any where in the conference after the morning sacrificial session. He had no interest in the propagation of knowledge. Emperor Seerdhwaja had retired to his cottage as he was feeling somewhat unwell.
